Graphics & Design
With no commercial training, Joe moved to Los Angeles. His first job was working in an antique tire shop, stacking tires. Two days a week he did drawings for the catalogue. Six weeks later, he was working in a small graphics shop for the aerospace industry. A year later, he worked at Hughes Helicopter creating isometric drawings for for the Apache-64 training manuals.
Joe is self-educated in all forms of graphic design, with over 30 years of print & advertising experience. All software training was also through direct experience and self-education, beginning with Adobe Illustrator in 1988.
Animation
Animation began crudely in 1992 with Macromedia Director, moving on to After Effects. Working as an Art Director for MEDED, he introduced multimedia and animation as a new presentation medium. 3D animation started in 1994 during the Dragon Period of his painting, when he taught himself Studio Pro to bring a dragon to life. Joe currently works in Maya and Cinema 4D.
Fine Art
His delicate sense of color relationships, and the bold way in which they are used, creates a dynamic polarity between meditative contemplation and energizing movement. As the viewer moves towards the surface of the piece, the distinctive brushwork enlivens its texture, giving each painting a unique animation.
In his early work, he concentrated on portraits and figures. Expanding on this style, he moved into landscapes. Working outdoors during most of the year, Joe developed his style into a neo-impressionism, greatly influenced by Monet, Pissaro and Van Gogh. In the Dragon period his paintings were created from imagination. However, in the last few years he has gone back to his greatest love: landscapes.
Joe also works in stained glass which adapts beautifully to his style, with finished pieces rivaling the dramatic effect of his paintings.
The fascination never stops!
